Outlander + New Age Spirituality
I am writing from Oregon, where I’ve been for the last three weeks. I’m living right along a river, deep in the Forest. I can see all the stars, hear the river flowing and the owls at night. I awake to the sound of robins and sparrows. Coincidentally, my natural surroundings are reminding me of a show I’m watching, historical fiction, based in Scotland — Outlander. I just finished the second season. I guess I’ve been living under a rock — I don’t know how I never watched this show. It is possibly my favorite show ever.
It’s intense and devastating at times. I love seeing the dynamics between the character’s personalities, amidst their wild circumstances of survival.
No spoilers.
Set in 1700s Scotland, Jamie, is a classic masculine hero, and he endures a lot of pain and makes difficult decisions in the name of honor and loyalty for his people and his country. He vows to protect his clan, in spite of their immaturities and division.
Jamie is ruled by his duty to protect, living with passion and integrity.
Jamie loves Clare, in spite of her strong, challenging personality or maybe because of it. He even changes his opinions and traditions to honor the truth that Clare reveals to him.
They both push each other to be become versions of themselves. Their relationship is full of honest conversations and revelations, and they sacrifice a lot to stand together for the things that matter most.
Most people in this time were deeply attached to family, religion and traditions, including wives tales and superstitions. In a time where family and tradition are everything, these two take big risks to stand up for what they believe is right.
They are not perfect, but they are passionate and take lead in their communities.
Throughout history, It has only been these types of people who sacrifice safety and appearances to stand up for what is right to change history.
Jamie and Clare sacrifice so much for their relationship and for what they believe in, for Scotland.
The beauty of that time, was the strength in loyalty over individual desires.
The beauty of our time, is how much power we have individually, to make our way in the world.
They didn’t have the same luxuries that we do. What you were born into, you were mostly stuck with. In someways, our modern world affords us to become more liberated to leave our home and pursue whatever we want in life.
Society is more accepting than ever. And yet, many of us are still so conditioned and controlled by what others think, and we don’t like to ruffle feathers. It is only a brave few who go against the grain for what they believe in.
Isn’t that what the spiritual community is all about? shifting beliefs. changing the narrative. manifesting.
Yet, In the modern spiritual world, healing is discussed mostly from an individual perspective. And yes, we need to heal individually before we can heal the world.
But, when we talk about manifesting, or healing, none of it really matters if we aren’t using our manifestation to lead moral lives, to shift narratives, to do something something bigger and more powerful than ourselves.
If we aren’t sharing our love and our gifts, are we doing anything meaningful?
What do we leave behind? What impact do we have? Are we living our truth? Pursuing what we really believe in?
Or are we stuck, buckling under the fear of being judged. By who, strangers on the internet? Our parents? Ghosts of the past? Our government?
A deep spiritual path, outside religion, was an alternative path, for only a few.
But now, the modern spiritual movement is trendy and includes “woke” people, many who are just following trends to fit in and look good doing so. But they still judge harshly against anyone they deem below them and try to force ideologies on others.
But true “Awakening” is a process of living with more alignment and that usually involves going against the crowd.
True “Awakening” is a process of opening the heart and releasing all judgement of others.
It’s not that you don’t discern right or wrong for yourself. But, you cannot give support for others when you judge them.
You support others by living your truth as a testimony to others, while also honoring where they are on their journey.
Through separation, many people continue to judge, and make ourselves higher or lower than others.
We heal the collective and bridge the divide through acceptance and forgiveness of the past. Then we can come serve the collective, more than our own egos.
We see this with celebrities (who some might say are egotistical)
Once many celebs have “made it” they no longer are trying to “manifest” for themselves as artists, but then they focus on doing work beyond themselves.
Many celebrities go onto start non-profits or speak out politically.
For example, Woody Harrelson is outspoken against the covid, as well as environmental issues. Adrianne Grienier speaks out on protecting the ocean and soil health. Jane Fonda has spoken for LBGTQ and Indigenous rights.
So, Are you manifesting for yourself or the greater good?
Yoga and somatic healing supports you individually, but when you feel whole, you tend to be kinder and more compassionate towards others. This is how we change the world, by first changing ourselves.
